American Gods

One of Neil Gaiman's many masterpieces (I would say my second favourite, after Good Omens which he wrote with Terry Pratchett) in which he spins the tale of long-forgotten gods and goddesses, trying to survive in modern America, competing and battling for worship and belief from the contemporary 'deities' of Technology, Television, and Credit Card.

It is always an interesting read when old-world myths are smoothly blended with modernity. (Of course, if you favour the myth+sci-fi combo, check out Eoin Colfer's And Another Thing... the finale to the ever-popular The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series.)

It is also extremely challenging to guess who the deities are from Mr. Gaiman's descriptions before he reveals their names since his deities came from a broad spectrum of pantheons -- Norse, African, Celtic, Hinduism, etc.

And then, there's The Forgotten God. The one who tweaks every reader's curiousity to the max, pondering "Who could this god be?". The one who is found prominently from pages 281 to 286 of the paperback. Mr. Gaiman wouldn't reveal him. There are forums online discussing who he could be, with curious souls pitting their two cents worth of deductions and theories.

Such irony.

The Forgotten God. The one whom no one recalls.

But everyone remembers.

Any CHANCE per se?

13 May 2010

A supposedly 'riled-up day' for some morons out there. FYI, it's called "history" because you are supposed to learn and not repeat it. Originality, people, come on.

As opposed to the previous line, it was another mundane day. A mundane, brain-juice-draining day. And I am absolutely pissy.

Pissy at:
- stupid people who complain about shallow racial sentiments...how ignorant are you?
- emoticons that move a lot (so I turned them off)...it gets on the nerves those stupid bouncy things
- being overall pissy

Okay. Fine. PISSED. Pissy does not refer to a non-stop urge to pee. Or to any act of peeing, for that matter.

The only high point of today, I would say, was when I helped a friend review his cover letter. I think that was the most fun I had. Goodness.

On a completely different note, I think I have some thoughts regarding the nuclear power thing going on recently, but am not in the mood to write up something insightful at the moment. Just that nuclear power may be a solution to the energy crisis, and it is relatively clean compared to what we are using now. Clean and safe, but only, and ONLY, if it is handled properly and with utmost responsibility. That said, in that case, perhaps we should just say 'No' or be prepared for another Chernobyl.

Yes. Pissy and cynical today.

Marathon Day

First order of business: a round of hearty congratulations to all!

Yu Li, Pei Ying, Snel, Claire, Jim, Kai Yee, Aldillah, Woan Yee : for finishing your run!

Because I run with the minimal amount of stuff, I don't have any shots of the start of the race, people on the road, the awesome sunrise...only after-run photos from a borrowed camera.

This being my first serious run, the Borneo International Marathon was an experience to me. I reckon marathons are not only a physical challenge, but a mental one at that too. And this is the first time I actually ran 10km.

The breakdown was constant running at the first 4km, and then an alternate of speed-walking and running faster than usual for the remaining 6km. I couldn't keep the pace because my toes were hurting from the chafing. Yes, I have blisters :( which means: TIME FOR NEW RUNNING SHOES!!!

Yu Li and I completed our 10km run in roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes, which personally, is quite an achievement. So am truly proud. For that and also for completing :) Up my next time target, perhaps? 1 hour 5minutes for 10km? LOL KL Marathon is coming up late next month *am tempted*

We have our proboscis monkey Finisher's medals :)

*oh yea*

There's a lesson to be learnt here: You'll never know what you are capable of doing until you've tried and done it. I wouldn't have thought I'd ever had the stamina to do long-distance running (all these while I thought I could only do sprints) but I proved myself wrong today. It is very satisfying though. Food for thought.

Self-satisfaction pride,

Pre-Marathon Day

The countdown has been going on since like ever.

And now it's less than 12 hours to my first serious run (7K Charity Run not counted, okay).

Am actually a tad nervous for goodness-knows-what reasons...and I'm only doing the 10km.

Things to do:
  • stock up on pasta

  • stock up on bananas

  • sleep early

  • update iPod

Dear Running God,

Please don't let my shoes, feet, legs, muscles fail on me. Also please don't let my iPod die on me.

I vow to finish my run within the appointed time (please please please).

Wish me luck you guys!
